Feather crafting was an ancient art that was central to Hawaiian culture. The hulu crafter was held in high esteem, most especially by the ali’i. They were expert gatherers of feathers done without harming the rare birds and they were artists creating intricate designs. Capes, cloaks, and helmets were made from the tiny feathers of five or six indigenous birds and were worn by the highest male chiefs in ancient Hawai’i. Kumu Hulu Mohala Reed will teach a workshop on the significance and making of the kahili (Hawaiian standard) a sacred insignia of ali’i status. Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by a parent or responsible party.
